Onimusha: Warlords Introduction

The Onimusha (鬼武者, 'Oni Warrior') series, developed and published by Capcom, comprises video games that blend historical figures from Japan's past with supernatural narratives. These games predominantly fall within the action-adventure genre, featuring a combination of third-person hack-and-slash combat interwoven with puzzle-solving components. Players take on the role of a protagonist wielding the Oni's power to combat the Genma, the series' primary antagonists. As of December 31, 2019, the franchise had achieved global sales of 8.5 million units,[1] ranking it as Capcom's ninth highest-grossing series, trailing behind franchises like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, Marvel vs. Capcom, and Ace Attorney.

In December 2018, a high-definition remaster of the inaugural game, "Onimusha: Warlords," was launched for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, followed by a Windows version in January 2019. The series took root in 1997 when Yoshiki Okamoto conceived the idea of crafting "Sengoku Biohazard," a ninja-themed counterpart to Capcom's own 1996 release, "Resident Evil" (known as "Biohazard" in Japan). This concept was set in the Sengoku period and revolved around a "ninja house" filled with intricate traps, evoking the mansion from "Resident Evil." The battles would incorporate swords, shuriken, scrolls, ninja magic, and various other ninja techniques. This project was initially aimed at Nintendo 64's 64DD platform.

Gameplay:

"Onimusha: Warlords" was initially intended for the original PlayStation but was eventually transitioned to the PlayStation 2. The unfinished version of the game for the original PlayStation was abandoned and never saw release.

Samanosuke Akechi, the central character across the series, was designed in the likeness of Takeshi Kaneshiro, who also provided the character's voice. Other characters in the series drew inspiration from real people, such as Yūsaku Matsuda in "Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny" and Jean Reno in "Onimusha 3: Demon Siege." Character animations were captured using motion-capture technology.

Although each installment of Onimusha introduces a new protagonist, they all share the common trait of being skilled swordsmen undertaking missions during Japan's Sengoku period, a time of feudal unrest. Throughout the series, the protagonists possess the ability to absorb Genma souls from vanquished foes, which aids in restoring health, fortifying weaponry and armor, and fueling the elemental strikes of special weapons.

Gameplay involves controlling the character using the D-pad (later titles introduced analog stick control) and navigating a predominantly linear path. The character's pace is generally deliberate, with a dash maneuver providing a modest speed boost. Actions like jumping, grabbing, and climbing are absent in Onimusha games.

Onimusha places significant emphasis on combat while infusing certain horror elements. Players wield an array of weapons, ranging from katanas to elemental-infused broadswords. Limited spiritual energy is available for deploying magical attacks, which vary based on the equipped weapon and other offensive attributes. These magical abilities can be enhanced throughout the game by accumulating souls from defeated enemies.

The story of "Onimusha: Warlords" commences with the demise of feudal lord Nobunaga Oda during a battle. One of the key warriors, Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi, receives a distressing message from his cousin, Princess Yuki, concerning the disappearance of servants from her castle. Samanosuke allies with kunoichi Kaede to rescue Yuki and uncovers malevolent creatures called Genma as the culprits. To combat the Genma, the Oni clan bestows Samanosuke with their powers. Amid his journey, Samanosuke learns that the Genma have resurrected Nobunaga, intending to harness Yuki and an orphan named Yumemaru's energies for his empowerment. Samanosuke thwarts this plan, saving Yuki and Yumemaru, and vanquishes the Genma Lord, Fortinbras, the God of Light. The tale takes diverse paths from there.

The sequel, "Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny," finds Nobunaga utilizing Genma forces to unify Japan and decimate Yagyu village, known for its role as Genma exterminators. Jubei Yagyu, the lone survivor of the Yagyu clan, embarks on a quest for vengeance and discovers his inherited Oni powers. He joins forces with the Oni's five orbs to confront Nobunaga's troops, rallying various allies who share his goal. Jubei infiltrates Gifu castle, confronting Nobunaga in a climactic showdown. Although Jubei eliminates Nobunaga, the warlord's essence persists, leading to a series of events in the spin-off game "Onimusha: Blade Warriors," where the cast from "Warlords" and "Samurai's Destiny" unite against Nobunaga's forces.

Final Words:

In "Onimusha 3: Demon Siege," Samanosuke's clan once again opposes the Oda forces. Before confronting Nobunaga, Samanosuke finds himself transported to modern-day Paris due to a Genma scientist's experiment. Meanwhile, secret agent Jacques Blanc becomes entwined with Guildernstern's machinations and is transported to Japan's Sengoku era. Jacques receives Oni powers from an oni, urging him to ally with Samanosuke from that timeline to defeat Nobunaga and secure his return home. As Jacques aids Samanosuke in the past, the latter is assisted by Jacques' descendants in investigating the Genma in the future. Ultimately, the two Oni warriors thwart the invasion and restore their respective timelines. Samanosuke seals Nobunaga's soul within the Oni Gauntlet to prevent further resurrections.

The fourth installment, "Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams," sees Nobunaga's servant Hideyoshi Toyotomi collaborating with the Genma to conquer Japan. Hideyasu "Soki" Yuki, Hideyoshi's illegitimate son, embarks on a mission to vanquish Hideyoshi and halt the Genma's agenda. Assisted by fellow warriors, including an elder Samanosuke, Soki harnesses his oni powers and teams up with friends to confront Hideyoshi's forces. Following the victory, it is revealed that the Genma Triumvirate manipulated Hideyoshi, aspiring to resurrect Fortinbras as the Genmas' God of Light. Despite their defeat, Fortinbras is resurrected, compelling Soki to use the Oni Gauntlet to obliterate the Genma and restore peace at the cost of his life. Subsequently, Samanosuke embarks on a quest to seal the Oni Gauntlet and prevent Nobunaga's resurgence.
